Art: Week Seven

Why the sky was red in Munch's 'The Scream'
I thought that this article about how scientists have found where Munch painted “the Scream.” Scientists have now determined exactly where Munch stood for his painting over 120 years ago. They now say that the sky is bright red in the picture because of a volcanic eruption at the island of Krakatoa in 1883. "The Scream" was painted in 1893 during a series of paintings called "The Frieze of Life." I just find it very cool that we now have information behind a fantastic piece of work. I enjoyed reading it and found the information about the volcano to be very interesting.

Elephant artists paint to save their species
This article was very interesting to read. It is about how Hong the Asian elephant, is helping to save her species from extinction. Her paintings are now on display in a gallery in Rancho Santa Fe. Del Mar residents Liz Allen and Mark Fangue are also trying to help the Asian elephants. The Elephants are on the extinction list and there are lass than 2,000 left in Thailand. Hong and other of her elephant friends have been painting these artworks and gaining more exposure. I think that this is a really cool idea because the elephants are not only helping themselves but they are using art to assist them. I find it amazing how some of these works turn out.

Wis. teen removes black-faced scarecrow ``art''
This article about how eighteen-year-old Marc Monfort was threatened with a fine for disorderly conduct because of his Halloween display. Monfort had a display of three black faced scarecrows hanging in his yard for Halloween. After police came and threatened him with the fine, Monfort changed his display and painted the face white. He also placed a sign near it asking if the display would have been a big deal if the faces where white. He took down the display but still people had been offended. I think that the display of hanging people is a bad idea. I understand that it was part of a Halloween display, but there are some things that you shouldn’t show. I can also understand why people might have interpreted the display originally as racist and I just hope that the situation blows over.
$10 Eco Friendly Bracelet Will Raise Major Money for Major Causes by Donating 50% of Sales to Charities -- Introducing "I'm Tired"
Reading this article about a brother-sister team who create bracelets to raise money for charities was inspirational. Carrie and Dan Hoffman created the team “I’m Tired” after watching their relatives suffer from various diseases. The bracelets are all made out of recycled materials. The band is made from recycled tires and we incorporate a bead, made from recycled metal. Each bracelet represents a cause, and there are ten causes all together. The first 10 causes are Autism, Alzheimer's, Cancer, AIDS, Global Warming, Child Abuse, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Animal Cruelty and World Hunger. Their goal is to raise as much money as possible to held overcome some of the issues of the world. I thought it is wonderful how these two people are working to help change the world. I also like how they are recycling materials to make their bracelets.
